University Division Academic Advisors

For most detailed discussions (such as those for academic exploration, future planning, and academic support) you will want to reserve adequate time.  You may schedule a 25-minute appointment directly on the advisor's online calendar, available at https://chenet.iu.edu/starnet3/.  Log in with your IU username and passphrase, select the advisor's calendar from the search feature, select the (available) day and time you wish to meet with the advisor, and fill in the requested data to schedule the appointment.  Please note this appointment in your own calendar/planner.   An e-mail reminder of the scheduled appointment will be sent to your IU e-mail account the day before the appointment.  If necessary, on the same website you may cancel and/or reschedule your appointment, or review the appointments you have scheduled.

Faculty Advisors/Mentors

If you are assigned to a faculty member, you may call that person directly to make an appointment or call his/her departmental office to obtain the advisor’s location and office hours. You may be able to schedule a conference with your advisor through that office or via email.

How do I prepare for an Advising Appointment?

You are encouraged to prepare thoroughly and thoughtfully for your academic advising appointments.  Reviewing information you’ve already been given and doing some preliminary planning on your own before meeting with your advisor will prepare you to ask good questions and to take full advantage of these important meetings.

Bring the following items with you to your scheduled advising appointments:
  • Your advising folder:  University Division students are given an advising folder at their orientation advising conference.  Keep your advising-related materials in this folder and remember to bring it to each of your advising appointments.  Being organized free will free you to focus on the important questions, issues and concerns that you and your advisor will discuss.

  • Paper and a pen/pencil:  Be prepared to take notes during your advising conferences.  Writing will help you think about the information and remember the details.  Keep your notes in your advising folder.

  • List of questions:  Think about your goals for an advising conference before you go into your advisor’s office.  What challenges are you facing and how might you need help?  What deadlines are approaching for you?  What classes are you thinking of taking next term.?  Write your questions and ideas in advance and you’ll be ready to begin a productive advising conversation.
