Indiana University Policy on Release of Student Records
To protect the privacy of a student's education record, the use of student information is governed by federal and state regulations as well as university policy. General information about the federal law, The Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), can be found on the website of the U.S. Department of Education. Indiana University’s Policy on student records is provided on the following webpage: Indian University’s Release of Student Info PolicyParent Resource for Understanding FERPA and IU Policy
The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs has a helpful webpage with answers to questions that parents frequently ask about access to student information, including notification in cases of emergency.
University Division Release of Information Procedure
A Release of Information form must be completed before any University Division staff member can speak with a third party concerning a student’s midterm grades, final grades , academic status, and any information that is not public. Students are provided the opportunity to submit the Release of Information form during new student orientation, but a student may file the form at any time. Please contact the University Division Records Office at 812-855-7797 about the Release of Information form.
Third Party Access to Student’s Account
IU Bloomington students have the ability to authorize another person (a third-party), such as a parent or guardian, to view specific types of personal information on the student’s account in the Student Information System (SIS). This “third-party” account is not authorized when a student submits a Release of Information form (see above). For more information about the “third-party” account, please visit the Registrar’s website.
